High Spinal Block

🔑 Key Priorities

  • Recognise and manage cardiovascular and respiratory compromise

  • Support until block recedes or ventilate if needed

🧠 Team Actions

Role

Task

Team Leader

Diagnose high spinal, guide vasopressor use

Airway Manager

Assess breathing, ventilate if needed

Circulation

Boluses + vasopressors (metaraminol, adrenaline)

🧭 Management Algorithm

  1. Recognise symptoms: hypotension, bradycardia, dyspnoea, paralysis

  2. Call for help

  3. 100% Oâ‚‚, secure airway if apnoeic

  4. Give fluid bolus + vasopressors

  5. Tilt head-up if tolerated

  6. Reassure patient, block should regress

🔄 Ideal Crisis Flow

            High Spinal Block
                  ↓
          Identify Hypotension, Apnoea
                  ↓
       Oxygenation + Vasopressors + Fluids
                  ↓
         Ventilate + Support Until Resolution
