Ben is a recent ICU refugee having rejoined ACRRM in 2023 after working with Casey Parker and the amazing crew in Broome in 2013.
He has had a very long walk through ICU to ACRRM and the RGA having started in Paediatric ICU in 2012. He subsequently spent 10 years in Paediatric and Adult ICU across 8 different ICUs and all ICU specialties. Most recently, his interest in Retrieval Medicine has helped him reopen the box of treasures that is Rural General Practice up in Far North Queensland. He has recently repatriated from across the ditch in Wellington and currently lives in Cairns with his beautiful wife, their three kids and a mischievous labrador named Sunny.
Ben's interests are in physiological variability, mathematics, big data, paediatrics and retrieval. He completed his PhD in Mathematic in 2005 and was a Clinical and Research Fellow in Wellington ICU in 2021. He was a Principle Investigator on the MAGIC study into Post-op cardiothoracic surgical vasoplegia and is the PI on the STARVE trial into fasting protocols for patients on GLP-1 RAs.
Ben founded and continues to dabble with www.cicmwrecks.com which is one of most popular primary exam resources for ICU trainees. He has spoken on the national first part education program for CICM since its inception and has presented his research and national and international conferences.
