# Talks and Teaching

This page has links to recordings of talks that I've given at various times. Some are really high yield, most are meanderings around my mind on some acedemic topic or another. All are helpful for something I hope.
### RGA Retrieval Talk

This talk is about what to expect (and not expect) from your retrieval service as an RGA and how to get the most out of that relationship.

### The "All Published Research is False" Rabbit-Hole

#### 1. You can't go forward and backwards in time.

The common tolls we use in inferential statistics were not designed to do what we in medicine think they are. This underpins alot of our problems with reproducibility. Unfortunately, the people who built these tools (Fisher, Neumann and friends) didn't mean for us to push them this way either. Ultimately this is a type of time travel problem. p-values and hypothesis testing are at different times in the experimental process and cannot be used together.

#### 2. What the phack is wrong.

There is something deeply wrong with the way we use statistics in medicine. Turns out not all questions are legitamate questions and asking them makes finding the truth more difficult. The issue is asking illigitamte questions is novel and publishable, and this is not great news.

#### 3. How can the Reverand Bayes help my Confidence

Now that I've lost faith in statistics, who can I turn to? The flying spaghetti moster or Reverand Bayes?

### Stewart the Strong-ion and the patent failure of traditional Acid-base Theory.

This is a really deep hole. I apologise for the dive in advance. But the normal approach to acid base theory makes no sense at all. If you retain CO2, then you get increased free hydrogn ions via the Hendersen-hasselback equation, sure, but what else to you get?

The other molecule you get is bicarbonate! You get it in exactly equal concentrations to the concentrations of hydrogen that you get. How come you don't get an increase in bicarbonate when you hold your breath? Also, this is abuffea buffer system, they definitionally resist changes. How is this traditional conception in any way aligned with resisting the change imposed on the system?

Also, while I'm here, why is it that bicarbonate is measured in mmoL but hydrogen is measured in nanomoL, but that's the one we think is causing the changes?
